Food Friday: A way to finally add bacon to your emergency kit

*Every Friday is all about food on Red Cross Talks – everything from Red Cross inspired recipes to emergency food tips and solutions.

This blog entry is for all the meat eaters out there – especially the bacon lovers.

There appears to be a lot of bacon lovers nowadays with a recent surge in this pork products’ popularity. Lately you can get bacon in many different forms: strips, bits, candied, in ice cream, and even as lip balm. Canadians are known worldwide for our love and appreciation of back bacon (known as “Canadian bacon” everywhere else).

However, bacon hasn’t been an easy item to add to one’s emergency kit until now.

As we recently saw in a Toronto Star article, a Seattle chef has invented bacon jam (yep, that’s bacon preserves) which will soon be available in Canada. Meant to be bacon with a gourmet twist, we think this could also be a disaster dining solution. You can add a jar to your emergency kit, and when there’s a blackout and you have a bacon craving, voila! The problem is solved.

We think bacon jam would pair well with crackers.

What do you think? Will this become a staple item in your emergency kit?
