In Riding Mountain National Park, where peace can meet sudden emergencies, Duty Officers — Reid Ahntholz and Bradley Bator — became real-life heroes.
During a busy July weekend, they responded fast to a visitor’s cardiac arrest on Lakeshore Trail. Using CPR, an AED, and their skills, they saved a life. Their actions turned a tragedy into hope — a true testament to First Aid training.

The Emergency Call on the Lakeshore Trail
The officers quickly mobilized with their mobile response AED and trauma/oxygen packs. When they arrived, they found an elderly man unconscious and blue in color. This blue tint showed he was not getting enough oxygen. Bystanders were already doing CPR on him.
The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) had also just arrived. One officer immediately took over chest compressions while Reid ran the AED. The device recommended a shock, which Reid administered.
The RCMP resumed compressions as Reid prepared the next cycle. After two minutes of continued CPR, Reid administered a second shock, followed by more compressions. Reid then helped EMS (Emergency Medical Services) replace the AED pads with their defibrillator.
While CPR and defibrillation were underway, Bradley gathered important medical information from a family member. Once EMS arrived, Bradley connected the bag-valve mask (BVM) to the oxygen supply. He helped move the patient to the ambulance.

The Lifesaving Impact of First Aid Training
Thanks to the quick response, early CPR, and the use of an AED, the patient’s condition improved rapidly. EMS achieved Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC), and they transported the patient directly to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit). He later made a full recovery with no lasting complications.
Reid and Bradley’s quick response and training turned a tragic day into one of hope. Their critical skills—like CPR and defibrillation—and teamwork with other responders showed the lifesaving power of First Aid. Their actions remind us how preparation and teamwork can save lives.
