Volunteer Spotlight: Jaskaran Gill helping refugees

While completing a BA in Global Studies at Ryerson University, Jaskaran Gill began volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross in September 2013. When the chance to volunteer with the First Contact Program came up, it was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

First Contact works diligently to assist refugees in Toronto by referring them to shelters and various other social services in the city. Helping refugees to become successful in establishing their new lives in Canada was something that made Jaskaran proud to be a part of the Red Cross. First Contact has also allowed Jaskaran to better connect with her community and various organizations in the city that are committed to supporting refugees during a time when they are most vulnerable.

This past May, Jaskaran was invited by Romero House to speak on behalf of First Contact at a Jane Walk organized to promote the First Contact and Restoring Family Links (RFL) programs.

Jaskaran had a terrific experience during the event and learned a lot. She was also able to meet people who are passionate about supporting refugees, as well as those who were simply looking to learn something new.

Thank you, Jaskaran, for being such a wonderful ambassador for the Red Cross.

First Contact is offered by the Red Cross in Ontario and Vancouver. Want to get involved? Contact your local Red Cross branch for volunteer opportunities.
