Red Cross volunteer registers Kashechewan residents after evacuation

Canadian Red Cross disaster response volunteers are providing assistance to approximately 1,500 people from the Northern Ontario community of Kashechewan which experienced severe flooding earlier this week. Evacuees are being sheltered in host communities across Ontario, including Thunder Bay, Cornwall, Greenstone and Kapuskasing.

The Red Cross is helping to ensure immediate needs of those evacuated have been met, including necessary supplies for babies or personal hygiene items. Volunteers, including Clement Giraneza from Ottawa shown in this photograph, also register each person who is evacuated. Registration in emergencies such as this one is especially important so that families can easily find one another if they were separated during the evacuation.

Clara and William Wynne, shown here, were evacuated on Monday to Cornwall, however, they do not know where other family members, including Clara’s elderly mother were evacuated to. By registering all evacuees and entering their names into a confidential Central Registration and Inquiry Bureau, the Red Cross can help re-connect families like the Wynnes.
