Canadian Red Cross surgical team to assist in South Sudan conflict

Five Canadian Red Cross medical personnel are being deployed to South Sudan to increase the International Committee of the Red Cross’ (ICRC) surgical capacity in communities recently affected by conflict in the region.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been wounded and/or forced from their homes in South Sudan as a result of outbreaks of armed violence since mid-December. The Red Cross is actively responding to meet the needs of families affected by this conflict.

From the very beginning of the crisis, the ICRC has been supporting the main hospitals in Juba. Four ICRC surgical teams have been working in hospitals in Juba, Malakal and Bentiu carrying out around-the-clock surgeries.

The Canadian team includes two anaesthetists, a surgeon and two operating theatre nurses. To read more about how the Canadian Red Cross personnel will assist in South Sudan, visit www.redcross.ca

The ICRC has also provided 259,000 litres of clean water to one of Juba’s main hospitals, distributed one-month food supply to nearly 60,000 displaced people as well as other basic items.
