May 19 is National Lifejacket Day – do you wear it?

*Guest blog by Nita Singh, coordinator, National Marketing & Promotions with the Canadian Red Cross.

National Lifejacket Day is May 19, and we are inviting you to help promote the importance of lifejacket wear by entering our photo contest. Show us that you wear it by submitting the best photo of you modelling your lifejacket!

Get creative and gather with your family members or friends for a group photo, or snap yourself in a unique location.

Individual prizes include an iPod nano and iTunes gift cards as well as inflatable lifejackets from Mustang Canada! If you work at a pool, get together with your colleagues and submit a group photo on behalf of your facility for your chance to win a class set of lifejackets from Mustang.

This year, 200 people will drown while boating. Yet most boating-related drowning fatalities could be prevented – by the simple use of a lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD).

Of those who drown, 88% are not wearing, or are not properly wearing a lifejacket or PFD. Many boaters feel safe just having a lifejacket nearby. But when something goes wrong, you won't have time to put it on. A lifejacket can save your life – but only if you wear it.

How to enter:

  1. First, please read and follow the contest rules.
  2. Attach your photo to an email addressed to contest@redcross.ca with the subject line “I wear it!” Remember to include your full name, address, age and phone number.

We welcome your submissions from May 13 – 31, 2011.

See your impact in action.
