Welcome to Canadian winter: preparing newcomers for their first winter

- For all of its beauty, Canada’s winters can be harsh, long, and full of unexpected or hidden dangers. Luckily, with some practical cold climate planning and winter safety knowledge, new Canadians can arrive ready for real life winter situations.

Working together to slow a COVID outbreak in Iqaluit

- As a COVID-19 outbreak in late April and early May 2021 impacted Iqaluit, Mayor Kenny Bell knew that help was needed. The Canadian Red Cross was brought to Iqaluit in mid-May to provide additional support to a homeless shelter in the city but, by the time the team left, they had also done Epidemic Prevention and Control (EPC) assessments for 13 organizations across the city.

COVID work in Nunavut 2020-2021

- Over the course of the 2020-21 fiscal year, the Canadian Red Cross played a role in supporting the Government of Nunavut in its COVID-19 response.

First Nations Health and Wellness Colouring Book

- The First Nations Health and Wellness Colouring Book is bursting with life and love. It is a gathering of Manitoba First Nation artists invited to react to and create with the themes of health and wellness. In partnership with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, the Canadian Red Cross produced the colouring book as part of a continuing conversation with First Nation communities to support health and wellness.

Psychosocial community supports

- Not widely known outside of Nunavut, the Canadian Red Cross provides psychosocial supports to communities in crisis that request help. During the pandemic, much of this support is virtual but the Red Cross social emergency team has found some unanticipated benefits in working this way.
 

Community grant helps feed immigrant families in Saskatchewan

- When the COVID-19 pandemic was declared a year ago, it didn’t take long for newcomers to Canada to start knocking harder on the door of the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre in Saskatchewan.
“People were being laid off from work. Families were struggling to make ends meet. One lady was crying. She had no food to feed her family. We basically pulled funding out of our reserve fund and gave her some money."

2021-2022 Nipivut Youth Leadership Conference

- The Nipivut Youth Conference has been held annually since 2016. The goal of the conference is to engage and support student leadership and promote student wellness.

Books for Kids: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library returns to Fort McMurray thanks to Red Cross gran

- For a four-year-old child, receiving a package in the mail is about as exciting as it gets. So imagine the delight when a book is delivered every month. That’s the idea behind the Imagination Library of Wood Buffalo in northern Alberta. The organization delivers an age-appropriate book monthly to more than 1,800 children, from birth until they reach the age of five.
