Canadian Red Cross response

On July 22, the Government of Alberta issued an evacuation order for Jasper and the surrounding area due to wildfires. As of August 16, the evacuation order was downgraded to an evacuation alert and the Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada have announced residents may begin re-entry. People living in Alberta can stay informed by visiting www.alberta.ca/emergency or downloading the Alberta Emergency Alert app.

The Canadian Red Cross is working closely with provincial and municipal governments and Indigenous leadership to support individuals, families and communities impacted by the 2024 Alberta Wildfires.

As of September 2, to support people evacuated from Jasper, the Canadian Red Cross has:
  • Distributed financial assistance to more than 3,800 households across all CRC programs
  • Mobilized more than 460 personnel to support the response.
  • Supported more than 1,570 families with hotel accommodations and food on behalf of the City of Edmonton.
  • Provided support at 5 reception centres; operated the Humanitarian Service Centre in Hinton and the Re-Entry Welcome Centre in Jasper.
  • Engaged in more than 4,100 conversations around safety and well-being.
  • Emergency supplies available for people returning home in Jasper, including more than 3,000 clean-up kits, 2,000 teddy bears and 3,000 blankets across several sites.
As the team transitions to assist with recovery from the wildfires, details on the new location for in-person services will be shared as soon as it’s available.

Financial assistance from the Canadian Red Cross

As the Municipality of Jasper begins with re-entry, the Canadian Red Cross is distributing an additional $500 in one-time financial assistance per household for people who are registered and whose primary residence is in Jasper. This assistance is meant to help respond to ongoing needs such as food, transportation, or clean-up supplies as people begin returning to Jasper, and to support those who are unable to return.

The Canadian Red Cross is also distributing $750 in one-time financial assistance per household for people who were living in Jasper at the time of the evacuation. This financial assistance is made possible thanks to the generosity of people who have contributed to the Canadian Red Cross 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal.
