The Canadian Red Cross is offering financial assistance through the Support to Rental Property Program to help small landlords impacted by the November 2021 flooding and extreme weather event in British Columbia. Eligible participants must have either a secondary suite (rental property that is part of their primary residence) and/or up to two rental properties in the impacted area.
Application Period
The application portal opens
March 7, 2023 and will remain open until the application deadline on
May 31, 2023, 23:59 p.m. PST.
Program Eligibility Criteria
The Canadian Red Cross Support to Rental Property Program is available for small landlords with less than three rental properties in Canada. To qualify for the program, a minimum of one property must have been impacted by the 2021 flooding and extreme weather event in British Columbia.
To be considered, landlords must have been renting the property before November 14, 2021, with proof of a signed lease and proof of payment from that time with the intent of renting the property out again as a long-term rental if it is not already being rented at the time of application.
Applicants must demonstrate that the physical damage from the November 2021 flooding and extreme weather event made the property uninhabitable for at least 30 consecutive days and that the damage is not covered by insurance. Additional eligibility criteria according to your property type:
- Rental property:
- Property must be for long-term stays (not vacation or short-term rentals).
- A maximum of 2 non-commercial properties are permitted per landlord.
- Secondary suite (rental property that is part your primary residence):
- The area occupied by the secondary suite must not be used as a primary residence by the landlord.
- A maximum of 1 secondary suite is permitted per landlord.
Funding available
Eligible secondary property owners will receive a payment of $5,000 per eligible property to help them repair and rebuild the dwelling, making it livable again after the event with the intend of renting it out.

- Create an account on the SM Apply platform OR please call us at 1-833-966-4225 from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. PST. We can take your information and have a Canadian Red Cross representative call you back to help.
- Fill out the application online and submit it.
- Our program support team will review your application and confirm your eligibility.
- If approved, you will receive a payment.
