When Bavleen Kaur moved to Winnipeg from India, she wanted to volunteer in her new community. Her attention was captured by the Canadian Red Cross SmartStart program, which teaches injury prevention to newcomers to Canada. She ended up applying her newfound safety skills almost immediately.

In an average month, personal disaster assistance teams respond to about 6 requests for assistance. But this July, our Winnipeg volunteers supported a massive 21 personal disasters.

The move to virtual-based volunteering has taken her from “barely” able to turn on a computer to supervising a team of Safety and Wellbeing volunteers using technology.
