Most 28 year-olds do not give up their careers to commit all their time to volunteering.
 
Abeer Shaker has a degree in media studies from Damascus University, but instead she’s been volunteering with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent since the very beginning of the Syrian crisis and has decided to continue her work in the humanitarian field.

Today, we’re turning our social media avatars red to show our support and solidarity with the volunteers of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, as we mark three years since the beginning of the conflict in Syria.

It has been just over three months since Typhoon Haiyan ravaged the Philippines. Red Cross has been providing relief to communities in need of food, shelter, clean water and medical assistance. Several National Red Cross Societies including the Canadian Red Cross continue to provide assistance and raise funds to boost the Philippine Red Cross’ plan to support the long-term recovery of 100,000 families in the worst affected areas over the next two years.

We’re celebrating Valentine’s Day by showing love and appreciation to our supporters, volunteers, donors, staff members and friends. With their support and contributions, the Canadian Red Cross is able to help families during disasters, offer first aid and water safety training, provide loans of health care equipment, empower youth to prevent bullying and so much more.

Tomorrow marks three months since Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines.

When a CN Rail train derailed last week, resulting in fire in several petroleum tank cars and the evacuation of more than 100 people from homes in a rural area in northwest New Brunswick, a team of Canadian Red Cross disaster volunteers was in place within hours to help.

The Red Cross worked out of a community centre in the nearby village of Plaster Rock, NB and supported evacuees and responders around the clock for nearly five days.

Volunteers are the life blood of the Canadian Red Cross. Volunteers help respond to both local and larger-scale emergencies and disasters including house fires and the effects of severe weather like floods or evacuations.

In a disaster or emergency, local government and agencies can call on the Canadian Red Cross to help support the affected community by addressing their immediate needs. In a disaster, a community or family's resources can be depleted rather quickly without the support of agencies like the Red Cross...
