Round-up: Red Cross responds to emergencies in the Maldives and West Africa

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

Maldivian Red Crescent volunteers distribute waterMALDIVES: After a fire broke out inside the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company’s Generator Unit on December 4, all water supplies in the capital Malé were cut off. Over 150,000 people were instantly affected, as most households rely on The Water and Sewage Company for their daily water needs. Following the incident, the Government of the Maldives declared a state of emergency, and a task force was set up to distribute free water. Distribution of drinking water is crucial, and together with the Maldives National Defence Force and the Police, the Maldivian Red Crescent deployed 150 volunteers and 24 staff to assist people waiting in long lines at distributions points around Malé.

BOTSWANA: The Government of Botswana has donated 15 vehicles to the IFRC to support its Ebola operations in West Africa. This donation will be divided between the three worst affected countries, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and will complement the more than 130 vehicles already on the ground, the largest ever fleet in IFRC history in an emergency operation.  Canadians can donate to the West Africa Ebola Fund to support ongoing efforts to stop the spread of Ebola.
