Teaching International Humanitarian Law through film

Who doesn’t love a good film? I do, especially films that are entertaining and also educational.

This weekend, the Canadian Red Cross, Ottawa branch is using film to help educate by hosting the “Even Wars Have Limits” film festival at the University of Ottawa. All the films during the festival are focussed around one topic: International Humanitarian Law (IHL).  Each film is followed by a panel discussion with representatives of various organizations.

"What is IHL", you ask? IHL - more commonly known as the laws of war - is a body of law that exists to protect people in times of armed conflict. In Canada, the Red Cross teaches about the importance of IHL to many groups including journalists, armed forces and the general public.

More information and the festival schedule can be found here.  Meanwhile, check out the trailer below of one of the featured films: “Triage".
