On October 23, 2011, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the eastern Turkish province of Van, killing more than 6,000 people and damaging more than 18,000 buildings.
The quake’s epicenter was below the village of Tabanli, in the eastern city of Van. Following the earthquake, the Turkish Red Crescent focused on search and rescue efforts and helping to support the immediate needs of those left homeless by the quake and they are now focusing on early recovery efforts. Psychosocial support is also being offered to assist with grief and post-traumatic shock among those affected.
To date, the Canadian Red Cross has contributed 3,000 high thermal blankets and 100 winterized tents to support thousands of people who have been left homeless. In addition to these supplies, the Government of Canada has supplied 500 winterized tents through the Rapid Response Project (RRP).
