Badger Flood

Note: The following appeal is now closed.  You can support our ongoing work by donating to the Canadian Red Cross

On February 15, the more than 1,000 residents of Badger, Newfoundland were forced to evacuate from their homes when a massive ice jam sparked major flooding from three rivers, leaving their town rapidly encased in ice and water. Red Cross was immediately called into action to provide for the needs of the displaced people, many who escaped with only the clothing on their backs.

Most residents fled to two temporary shelters in nearby Grand Falls-Windsor or are staying with friends or relatives in the community. With the support of our donors, the Red Cross was able to ensure that essential relief services were provided to the affected families. In collaboration with the Department of Human Resources and Employment and Salvation Army, Red Cross has registered the evacuees and is providing them with immediate relief in the form of food, clothing and personal care items. People in the shelters, along with evacuees staying elsewhere are provided cash vouchers to purchase the items they need at local stores. Red Cross has also responded to hundreds of inquires from family and friends across Canada wanting information about their loved ones from Badger.

After carrying out a preliminary needs assessment, the Red Cross determined that there is a need for recovery assistance for the people affected by this disaster. Within the Canadian Red Cross guidelines, an allowance can cover the replacement of essential home contents like a stove or refrigerator, as well as an allowance for children’s needs, school supplies, clothing and other necessities. A thorough needs assessment of the affected families is currently underway.

An appeal for $3 million was launched on February 19 to support both the relief and recovery operations of the Canadian Red Cross. Please visit our Donate Now! section to make a cash donation.
