New Brunswick Floods

Flooding along the St. John River and other waterways in April-May 2018 caused damage and forced people from their homes. The Canadian Red Cross has worked with civil and provincial authorities to respond to the needs of those impacted by flooding, such as registering evacuees, arranging emergency lodging and food where required, and in some cases providing financial assistance.

Eligible households will receive $300 by electronic funds transfer – the quickest, most secure way to receive funds. After registering with the Red Cross, information and eligibility criteria are validated, and then funds will be distributed. This financial assistance is to help meet immediate, urgent needs, such as food, lodging, medical supplies, clothing, and other essential needs.
Who gets the $300?
The $300 electronic funds transfer is a single amount for the entire eligible household whose primary residence was in a flood-impacted area as confirmed by government, and as a direct result of the flooding were:
  • evacuated from their primary home for more than two days; or
  • were without power for more than three days; or
  • had water damage and/or sewer backup; and
  • who self-identify to the Red Cross that they face financially difficulty to replace contaminated or spoiled food, or to purchase additional cleaning supplies.
Why electronic funds transfers?
Electronic funds transfers are a user-friendly, easily accessible method to send and receive money. By providing assistance this way, those who are impacted by flooding are able to use the money where they need it most.
What if I don’t have online banking?
Alternate arrangements will be made with eligible households that do not use online banking, or who do not have an e-mail address or a bank account.

Additional support
Depending on the final amount of donations to the Red Cross and number of households that register for help, additional support may be provided later to meet specific needs of households facing the greatest hardship, as determined through one-on-one assessments.
