A chance encounter at a party changed G’s life forever. Armed conflict and chaos in the Congo ripped her family apart, and after almost a decade of separation and searching, she finally found a path to reunification.

Over two years ago, Nicole Greville was one of more than 80,000 Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo residents impacted by devastating forest fires. When she returned to Fort McMurray weeks after being evacuated, she felt restless and sidelined. She decided to become a walk-in volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross.
 

Our volunteers consist of thousands of remarkable Canadians, generously giving their time to help others in need. Here we sit down with one such volunteer from P.E.I., Jamie MacKay who shares what he has seen and experienced as a volunteer, and why he does it.

I’ve always wanted a life that I can be proud of. I get the most satisfaction out of helping others. This was temporarily taken away from me in 2012. I live with a progressive neuromuscular disease that has left me a quadriplegic.

In Mali, every year between July and September, heavy rains fall across the country. Some regions, such as Sikasso, are hit harder than others and the damage goes far beyond material goods. Families are left homeless, flooded areas quickly become breeding grounds for diseases such as malaria, which is a leading cause of death in children under five. One of the essential roles of Red Cross volunteers is to support people affected by disasters.

Recently, Red Cross provided assistance to a family in Saskatchewan who survived a catastrophic house fire. The family was barbecuing on their deck. The son stepped out to check on dinner but hesitated when he reached the grill. The barbecue seemed far too hot, so he returned to the kitchen to fetch some oven mitts. Just as he crossed the threshold, the propane tank exploded.
