We recognize that there's a lot to learn before becoming a Canadian Red Cross volunteer.
That's why we have collected the most frequently asked questions to help you become a volunteer.
If you still have questions that remain unanswered, or you need more information, please contact us.
All volunteer roles at the Canadian Red Cross are for opportunities within Canada. If you are interested in becoming an International Aid Worker, here’s what you need to know before you apply.
First, find a role that interests you — one that suits your skills and experience and fits your schedule.
After you've formally applied a representative from the volunteer recruitment team will be in contact to advise you of the next steps.
This varies depending on the role and the time of year.
More time commitment details are provided in the role descriptions and during the application process to make sure the opportunity is a good fit for you.
You should have received a confirmation email once you completed your online application. If you have not received a confirmation within 24 hours, please contact us.
Time commitments vary by volunteer opportunity. Check out the volunteer opportunities to see which roles might fit your schedule. After the application, you will have a chance to discuss this in more detail during a scheduled conversation.
We provide all our volunteers with access to learning opportunities that will best prepare them for the volunteer work they have expressed an interest in being involved in.
April to August is typically the busiest time of year for emergencies, so if you’re interested in being a volunteer, we encourage you to apply prior to this time of year.
However, volunteers are needed year-round for a variety of programs.
The health and safety of our volunteers is essential to us. All emergency response work is undertaken with the safety of all Red Cross personnel in mind. Most of the work happens outside of the immediate impact areas and we always follow the direction of local authorities to ensure safety.
In addition, information about safety concerns, orientation and training is provided to volunteers prior to taking on their assignments.
Contact us and a member of our team will support you to address your questions.
The age for volunteer roles varies by role and level of risk. Any age requirements are listed in the role descriptions.
Yes. Volunteers are reimbursed for approved travel and personal expenses when on Canadian Red Cross business. Your supervisor will share the process with you once you become a volunteer.
