Mobile Food Bank Driver's Assistant

Volunteer opportunity conditions :

- Minimum age : 18 years and older
- Minimum volunteer hours/period : Minimum six-month commitment, with an average of 5 hours per week required. Five hours per week with a focus on Wednesdays or as required.
- Specific requirements : Must have access to a mobile phone and be comfortable with repetitive heavy lifting up to 25 lbs (loading and unloading hampers and coolers). Work may involve performing tasks in different weather conditions.

The Community Health and Wellness Team is looking for volunteers to be part of their mission. The Mobile Food Bank Driver’s Assistant volunteer will support a full-time delivery driver while performing deliveries to program clients who are experiencing food insecurity.
As a volunteer in this role, you will :
- Assists driver with loading the vehicle – food hampers, bags of fresh vegetables, and coolers.
- Provides assistance with navigation while on route if required (GPS and phone provided).
- Calling clients prior to arrival with an arrival time to ensure clients are prepared to receive the delivery.
- Loading fresh and frozen items from coolers into the food hampers upon arrival at client’s residence.
- Assists the driver in transporting food to the client’s door (hand carts provided by Red Cross).
- Supports driver to locate a safe and convenient parking spot – if necessary, stay with vehicle.
- Records time of delivery on driver’s route delivery list and any other information about the delivery or information which may have been provided by client (change of address, change of phone number, special requests, feedback).
You bring these essential talents :
- Good communication skills.
- Good customer service skills.
- Physically able to carry up to 25lbs.
- Good working knowledge of the city of Toronto and surrounding area.
- Empathy and compassion in working with vulnerable populations.
A satisfactory Enhanced Police Information Check or equivalent is mandatory for all personnel volunteering or working with the Red Cross.
