ERU Deployments: Making a Lasting Impact

Red Cross Emergency Hospital operating in a remote area in Nepal following the 2015 earthquake.

An ERU deployment can last up to four months, during which Canadian Red Cross personnel work closely with the Red Cross from the affected country as well as with local doctors and nurses.

At the end of the operation, the Canadian Red Cross can handover the equipment, with the required training and support for local actors to reuse the field hospital.

For instance, after Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines in November 2013, CRC handed over the field hospital to the Philippines Red Cross and conducted a two-year project to support them in maintaining and re-deploying the field hospital. Since then, the Philippines Red Cross has re-deployed it to domestic disasters and assisted thousands of people.

Similarly, in Nepal and Ecuador, the CRC is conducting the same process where the equipment was handed over to the local Red Cross and will be re-utilized for future domestic response.
