Holiday financial assistance available for people impacted by wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador
Additional $500 being provided to households evacuated for more than 14 days due to wildfires
The Canadian Red Cross announced today that $500 in additional one-time financial assistance will be provided to eligible households impacted by the 2025 Newfoundland and Labrador Wildfires. This support is thanks to the generosity of donors and is intended to help cover costs and expenses related to wildfire recovery during the holiday season.
The holiday financial assistance is available to households that were evacuated for more than 14 days and were registered, authenticated, and living in a community impacted by the wildfires. There is no need to register again. The Canadian Red Cross is reaching out directly to eligible households with details on accessing funds. If households previously received assistance from the Red Cross via e-transfer, no further action is required.
Thanks to donations to the 2025 Newfoundland and Labrador Wildfires Appeal, the Canadian Red Cross continues to offer the following supports for people impacted by the fires as they navigate their recovery:
- Personalized recovery support, which may include understanding insurance and community resources, referrals, and mental health and well-being support.
- Financial support to assist with early recovery needs for all eligible households impacted by the 2025 Newfoundland and Labrador Wildfires. This includes for people with a primary residence that sustained major damage or was destroyed, as well as for those who sustained little to no damage to their primary residence. This assistance is provided following an assessment of individual household needs related to recovery.
- Financial assistance for eligible small businesses and not-for-profit organizations through the Support to Small Businesses and Not-for-Profits Program.
- In-person support with Red Cross personnel in Carbonear, Small Point, and Ochre Pit Cove.
The Canadian Red Cross continues to work closely with the provincial and municipal governments, as well as community representatives and partners to help ensure the support provided responds to the unmet needs of individuals, families and communities impacted by this summer's wildfires.
If people impacted by the wildfires have questions about support or have unmet needs, they can contact the Red Cross by emailing NLsupport@redcross.ca or by calling 1-800- 863-6582, Monday to Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (NT).

QUOTE:
“The Canadian Red Cross understands that it takes time to recover from a disaster. We also know that the extra expenses related to the holiday season can be especially difficult after a major event like the wildfires. Our hope is that this holiday financial assistance will help ease some of the difficult financial decisions facing residents impacted by the wildfires this season. We also encourage people who have unmet needs related to the fires in Newfoundland and Labrador to reach out to us for a one-on-one meeting. We are here to help and are committed to assisting people impacted by the fires with their recovery.”
