The Canadian Red Cross Commemorates 30 Years Since the Saguenay Flood

In the summer of 1996, Saguenay–Lac‑Saint‑Jean entered one of the most challenging periods in its history. Thirty years later, the Canadian Red Cross is joining communities across the region to honour the memory of the event, acknowledge the resilience of those affected, and reaffirm the importance of the solidarity that shaped the recovery process.

Record-level rainfall that started on July 19, 1996 caused flooding and damage on an unprecedented scale and disrupted the lives of thousands. In the days that followed, and for many years after, the Red Cross supported affected communities throughout their recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The Saguenay flood remains among the most defining responses in recent Red Cross history in Quebec. Beyond the immediate relief and assistance provided to those affected, the event helped shape new approaches to preparedness, response, and long‑term recovery following major disasters.

Thirty years later, the Red Cross is paying tribute to the resilience of impacted individuals, families, and communities, as well as to the commitment of volunteers, partners, emergency responders, and everyone who mobilized to support the region.

This commemoration is a reminder that solidarity is central to disaster response, and that the lessons learned from the Saguenay flood continue to guide humanitarian action today.
