Already an educator or certified instructor? The Canadian Red Cross recognizes your background. Through our Instructor Transfer Pathway, qualified candidates can streamline their journey and become Red Cross Instructors without repeating training they’ve already mastered.
You’ll still follow the Instructor Development Program (IDP), but some steps may be waived depending on your qualifications.

There are two options for transferring into the Red Cross First Aid Instructor pathway. Applications are reviewed through Instructor Development Centres.
There are also two options for candidates with a background in psychological health and teaching.
The Red Cross Instructor Transfer Pathway saves you time while ensuring you meet our national standards. Whether you’re an experienced educator, fitness professional, or instructor from another recognized agency, we’ll help you transition smoothly into the Canadian Red Cross Instructor Network.

Youth Leader Transfer Pathway
Who qualifies:
- Educators (elementary or secondary level)
- Recreation Leaders
- Holders of one of the following certifications:
- Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor
- HIGH FIVE Trainer
- National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 2 or above (any sport)
- Canadian Aquafitness Leaders Alliance (CALA) Instructor
- WaterArt Instructor
- Canadian Fitness Professionals (CANFit PRO) certification

First Aid Instructor Transfer Pathway
There are two options for transferring into the Red Cross First Aid Instructor pathway. Applications are reviewed through Instructor Development Centres.
Option 1: Previous First Aid Instruction Experience
- Current instructor-level certification from another recognized First Aid agency.
- Pathway adjustment: Discipline-Specific Classroom Component is not required.
Option 2: Previous Experience as an Educator
- Experience as an educator (elementary or secondary level).
- Holders of Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor or HIGH FIVE Trainer certifications also qualify.
- Pathway adjustment: Fundamentals of Instruction – Classroom Component is not required.
Psychological First Aid Instructor Transfer Pathway
There are also two options for candidates with a background in psychological health and teaching.
Option 1: Previous Psychological First Aid Instruction Experience
- Current Psychological First Aid Instructor certification from another recognized agency.
- Pathway adjustment: Discipline-Specific Classroom Component is not required.
Option 2: Educator or Red Cross Instructor/Trainer
- Current Red Cross Instructor, Facilitator, or Trainer, OR an educator (elementary or secondary level).
- Pathway adjustment: Fundamentals of Instruction – Classroom Component is not required.
