Volunteer Profile: Tom Hamson

This week’s profile features Tom Hamson, who has been a Red Cross volunteer for more than 15 years.

A processes and procedures man, Tom has been involved with many Red Cross Manitoba teams in order to help improve and streamline operations.

Tom is a member of the Emergency Response Site Managers Team, he also acts as a government liaison during disaster responses, facilitates Red Cross national courses and prepares and facilitates Manitoba Red Cross volunteer workshops.

In recognition of his substantial contributions as a volunteer, the Governor General of Canada awarded Tom the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, in 2016.

Along with his work for Red Cross, Tom also sits on the boards of several organizations as an executive member. In order to relax and unwind, Tom and his wife Vera enjoy photography, travel, yard work and spending time with their grandchildren.

Over the last couple of years, Tom has assisted in different Red Cross disaster responses, including evacuations of several Manitoba communities. The opportunity to help evacuees deal with the aftermath of a disaster has been very important to Tom.

“Volunteering for the Red Cross is an opportunity for anyone who desires to help those who need it. The time commitment required both during response and between responses brings a great deal of satisfaction from knowing that the opportunity to help and the time spent makes a difference.”
