Spring Steam Cleaning

Every year, many strategies are used when working with First Nations communities to prepare for spring flooding. This year, we’re working with steam.

During flood preparedness conversations, it was determined that both Ebb and Flow First Nation and Peguis First Nation would benefit from having culvert steamers on hand for the upcoming flood season.

Both communities experience some level of flooding every year, and they are in long-term recovery due to past flooding.

The Canadian Red Cross secured funding through its own flood recovery grants and from the Sprott Foundation to buy and deliver the machines to the two First Nations.

The steam machines clear the culverts of ice, which allows for the unobstructed flow of water during the spring run-off. The units will help to mitigate overland flooding in both communities.
