The Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls program helps address feelings of loneliness and isolation. The program pairs a trained Red Cross volunteer with an adult aged 18+ who feels isolated or lonely, who may have limited social and family connections, or feels they could benefit from more social interaction. Volunteers provide wellness checks through phone calls and can help provide connections to community resources and other referral services for long term support. Scheduled phone calls are tailored to meet each person’s needs. Calls can range from a two-minute check-in to a longer, more social chat. People can participate in the program by:
If you know someone who could benefit from Friendly Calls, please connect with the program. The Friendly Calls program is a free service available to all adults in Alberta. We may have some volunteers who speak other languages and may be able to provide a match in another language. “People are telling us how grateful they are. Some people say that ‘you're the first person that called me in two months. You’re the first person who asked me how I'm doing. You’re the first person who says, do you need anything?’ They’re so thankful that we are calling them.” – Friendly Calls volunteer
