2022-2023 Community Health and Wellness Overview

How We Help

Through our Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP), the Canadian Red Cross loans medical equipment such as crutches, canes, wheelchairs, and other items to help people recover at home from illnesses and other health issues. In 2022-23, Red Cross loaned more than 52,000 pieces of health equipment to more than 27,000 Albertans.

This year was a busy one for the seven HELP locations in Alberta as the number of clients increased from last year. Our invaluable volunteers worked almost 10,000 hours assisting people with loans, accepting returns of health equipment, providing administrative support, and inspecting, cleaning, disinfecting and doing repairs as needed. At the end of February, the HELP locations opened their doors for walk-in access again, as well as by appointment.

Additionally, the Red Cross Friendly Calls Program in Alberta was expanded and is now available to people aged 18 and older who might be feeling isolated or lonely, have limited social and family connections, or feel they could benefit from more social interaction. The team of compassionate and dedicated volunteers and staff is comprised of individuals who have different abilities, experiences, cultural backgrounds, and speak many languages. “You made me laugh today, thank you,” one participant said. Another told a volunteer that “Tuesday is my favourite day of the week.”

Between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023, there were 16,054 calls made to people in Alberta by specially trained volunteers to provide a sense of companionship, and links to resources in the community.
