Community Health

The Canadian Red Cross loans medical equipment such as crutches, canes, wheelchairs, and other items to help people recover at home from illnesses and other health issues through our Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP). In 2021-22, Red Cross loaned more than 46,930 pieces of health equipment to almost 24,000 Albertans.

HELP in Alberta also supported the COVID-19 response by continuing to provide health equipment, such as walkers, IV poles, bath aids, and wheelchairs, to people being discharged from the provincial health care system to continue their safe recovery at home.

Additionally, the Red Cross Friendly Calls Program in Alberta was available to HELP clients aged 55 and older who might be feeling isolated or lonely, have limited social and family connections, or feel they could benefit from more social interaction. A referral from a health care provider or a community-based referral from someone known to the person, with their consent, is needed to participate. Between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022, there were 13,266 calls made to people in Alberta by specially trained volunteers to provide a sense of companionship, and links to resources in the community.
