Emergency Management

The Canadian Red Cross continues to help people and communities affected by emergencies and disasters, both personal and on a large scale like wildfires and floods.

In Alberta in 2019-20, the Red Cross assisted 1,774 people after a disaster and responded to 218 personal disasters such as house fires. Whether helping an evacuated family reunite with its beloved pet cat or working collaboratively with community partners, Red Cross has been there to assist and innovate during emergency responses.

The Red Cross also continued to work with communities on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiatives. In Alberta, 743 people participated in DRR workshops to help families be ready and more self-sufficient after a disaster.

As awareness of the COVID-19 pandemic began circling the globe, the Canadian Red Cross began to adjust and implement changes to its emergency response procedures for these unprecedented times.
