Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to disasters and climate change. Regularly impacted by floods and cyclones, the region’s humanitarian challenges are further compounded by economic instability and soaring prices that continue to impact millions of people and their livelihoods.

Bangladesh hosts more than a million displaced people who have fled violence in Rakhine State in Myanmar, putting additional strain on essential services like health, sanitation, shelter, and protection. The recent earthquake has further increased the humanitarian needs.

Funding cuts have impacted critical humanitarian services in Cox’s Bazar, where most displaced people have settled, and host communities, including emergency health care, sexual and reproductive health services, water, sanitation and hygiene programs, as well as livelihoods training and disaster risk governance.

Partnership in action: Red Cross support to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh

Since 2011, the Canadian Red Cross has been partnering with the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society to build capacity to respond to the country’s most urgent crises.

Partnership efforts focus on supporting health care services, access to safe water, sanitation improvements, protection initiatives, and shelter solutions.

The Canadian Red Cross is currently supporting primary and maternal health care services, providing essential medical services; water, sanitation and hygiene programs; and disaster assistance and protection services for women and children, including a community centre. Activities cover protection and recreational support, monitoring, community awareness, meetings, information desks, and volunteer engagement.
