Spring is around the corner. That means warm weather, short sleeves and other lovely things. It also means melting snow and potential flooding.

Research shows that only 6% of Canadians are aware of the flood risks in their area. However, there are simple things every homeowner can do to prepare themselves for flooding this season. Be ready for flooding with this checklist.

Be Ready Checklist

General

  • Know the risks for your community. Figure out where you can get information and weather alerts for your area.
  • Create a plan for you and your family.
  • Put together an emergency kit.
  • Turn around – don’t drown! Never drive through or walk through flood water.
  • Keep children and pets away from flood water. Flood water is full of bacteria and can make you sick.
  • Download our Be Ready App for weather alerts, preparedness info and awesome quizzes to get you ready!

Outside your home

  • Make sure the storm drains close to your home are clear of any debris. And make sure water can drain away easily.
  • Take the time to inspect your foundation and make sure there’s proper grading around it.
  • Install window wells and covers.
  • Clean your eavestroughs consistently (make sure they aren’t clogged up with leaves and other gunk).
  • Extend your downspouts and make sure the water is draining away from your home.

Inside your home

  • Keep the floor drains clear in your basement.
  • Store any valuables that you have in your basement or on the lower levels of your home in water tight containers.
  • Install a sump pump with a back up pump and power supply.
  • If you have a sump pump, make sure it’s working.
  • Install and maintain a backwater valve.
