Red Cross supports those affected by Tropical Storm Iselle

The American Red Cross is currently providing support across the Hawaiian Islands as people start to clean up from Tropical Storm Iselle. The Red Cross also continues to provide shelter to those who cannot return home yet due to power outages and blocked roads.

Last week, thousands of people took refuge in more than 30 Red Cross evacuation centres as the storm hit Hawaii with strong winds and heavy rains.

Hurricane Julio was expected to make landfall, however it weakened as it neared Hawaii.

As a reminder for Canadians, the Atlantic Hurricane season takes place from June to November each year. The best way to protect yourself and your family in the event of a hurricane is to follow these three steps:

  1. Know your risks: Find out if you live in an area where hurricanes could potentially happen.
  2. Make a plan: Work with your family to make a plan so that when a hurricane happens, you are ready.
  3. Get a kit: You can buy a preparedness kit from the Red Cross, or make your own.
