The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

Syria: At least 3,000 volunteers are actively involved in aid operations for the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and approximately 10,000 volunteers have been trained to provide support in disaster response, first aid, restoring family links, relief distribution and other priority activities.

A woman collects her family’s sack of essential household goods, such as blankets, mosquito nets, clothing and kitchen utensils. All things that she had to leave behind when she fled her home.  Mali: The ordeal of many people displaced by the conflict in Mali is far from over. Although some displaced people are returning home – mostly in central Mali – many prefer to wait and see how the situation unfolds before returning. Several thousand people have taken refuge in Tinzawatene, in the Kidal region in the far north. The plight of more than 6,500 displaced people and the 400 local families who are sharing their meagre resources with them is a cause for concern. Relief efforts by the ICRC and the Mali Red Cross are getting under way. Food and other essentials will be distributed and measures will be taken to improve their water supply.
