How can Facing Fear help you?

From fires to earthquakes to man-made hostile situations, emergencies can manifest in many different ways. Regardless of their origins, they can have a similar effect on those impacted by provoking a sense of uncertainty, anxiety and nervous tension. The fear that can arise as a result of emergencies and disasters can accumulate over time, leading people to carry the stress of these incidents for years to come.

As one of the most active charity organizations in Canada, the Canadian Red Cross strives to respond to the needs of vulnerable communities and persons in the aftermath of setbacks. Food, water, shelter and clothing are just a few of the things that the Red Cross works to provide. The National Society is equally committed to helping individuals gain access to much-needed educational resources and materials.

With the Facing Fear program, the Canadian Red Cross helps youth learn to cope with the concerns that develop following a terrorist attack or the outbreak of armed conflict.

Learning how to face fear
The Canadian Red Cross' Facing Fear program was adapted from the American Red Cross' similar service. Both are intended to help youth gain the emotional strength and perspective needed to overcome challenges that may be introduced after an emergency has occurred.

Educators who seek to teach youth using the Expect the Unexpected program - another curriculum offered by the Red Cross focused on disaster preparedness - can complement these teachings using Facing Fear.

By offering hands-on activities that allow children to engage in the course material, Facing Fear gives youth the tools they need to work through their feelings of tension and uncertainty in the aftermath of terrorism.

Another element that helps to set Facing Fear apart is its involvement of families. Expect the Unexpected integrates family disaster preparedness planning into lessons, and Facing Fear takes a similar approach in an effort to make the learning experience more comprehensive.
