Canadian Red Cross supports Peguis First Nation in Manitoba
In anticipation of flooding risk in Peguis First Nation, the Canadian Red Cross partnered with Global Medic to preposition sandbagging equipment, as well as flood barriers to deploy rapidly, as needed.
At the request of Peguis First Nation community leadership, through an agreement with Indigenous Services Canada, Canadian Red Cross has deployed personnel and specialized technicians near Peguis First Nation. Canadian Red Cross teams are sandbagging to contribute to flood mitigation efforts. Teams are also supporting the implementation of flood barrier equipment in Peguis First Nation.
Additionally, the Canadian Red Cross is providing Peguis First Nation with warm gear and protective equipment, such as insulated hip waders, protective equipment, rubber boots and insulated gloves. Warming tents are also being set up in the community to provide a safe, dry space for individuals working to protect homes and the community. These tents are fully equipped with power and heating systems, as well as chairs and tables to support comfort and rest. Cots are also being provided to Peguis First Nations for other volunteers helping with mitigation efforts in the community.
We remain in close contact with Peguis First Nation community leadership, Indigenous Services Canada, and the Government of Manitoba to provide support as needed in the days ahead.
The Red Cross has the following information available for flooding preparedness and support resources at www.redcross.ca/FloodingResources.
QUOTE:
“This support is the continuation of a long-standing relationship between the Canadian Red Cross and Peguis First Nation. Faced with potential flooding in the community, the Canadian Red Cross is helping Peguis First Nation prepare by filling sandbags to help protect homes, as well as providing warm gear, protective equipment, cots and warming tents to help care for people assisting in the community. The Red Cross stands ready to provide other assistance in the coming days, as needed.”Luc Mullinder, vice-president Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nunavut, Canadian Red Cross
