Canadian Red Cross continues to help residents of Jasper impacted by wildfires
As we approach the one-year mark of the wildfires that affected Jasper, the Canadian Red Cross continues to work with the community to ensure those impacted by the disaster have the supports they need to move forward.
Thanks to the generosity of people across the country and the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta, the Canadian Red Cross has been able to support people impacted by the devastating wildfires that swept through Jasper, from the early days of the disaster in July 2024 through to the recovery that continues today.
QUICK FACTS
The Canadian Red Cross has helped people, organizations and businesses impacted by the wildfires in Jasper by:
- Providing financial assistance to more than 4,000 eligible households to support basic and immediate needs following the wildfires, as well as for re-entry, and extended displacement.
- Supporting more than 3,400 households in their recovery through personalized recovery support. This includes providing financial assistance to support residents of Jasper with early recovery needs, as well as additional assistance to assist those whose home sustained major damage or was destroyed due to the wildfires.
- Providing more than 300 small businesses and not-for-profit organizations with financial assistance through the Support to Small Businesses and Not-for-Profits program to help with immediate needs following the wildfires, as well as to support them in their recovery.
- Providing grant funding to 11 community organizations to implement activities focused on directly supporting the recovery of fire impacted communities and to support them in navigating their own organizational recovery following the wildfires.
- Providing grant funding to 7 not-for-profit organizations for events focused on promoting social cohesion, such as holiday celebrations, as well as arts-based and land-based activities aimed at community recovery during the winter holidays.
- Supporting more than 250 households with property management services for residents staying at interim housing sites in the Town of Jasper and in Jasper National Park. These services are offered on behalf of Parks Canada and in collaboration with the Municipality of Jasper.
“It is important for people to understand that disaster recovery takes time. It is not a linear process. Last year, every household, community organization and business in Jasper was affected by the wildfires, and many people continue to face the ongoing challenge of recovery. The Red Cross remains committed to being in Jasper and adapting to help meet the recovery needs of people and the community as they arise.”
- Conrad Sauvé, President and CEO, Canadian Red Cross
The support provided by the Red Cross has been possible thanks to the more than $41 million raised through the 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal and matching funds from the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta. More information can be found in the 2024 Alberta Fires Update.
