The University of Manitoba, Centre for Defence and Security Studies and the Canadian Red Cross present the Paul Buteux Memorial Lecture
In-person, public lecture by Dr. Valerie Oosterveld, Western University
 
Join us for a special lecture by Dr. Valerie Oosterveld, Professor of Law and Associate Director of the Centre for Transitional Justice and Post-Conflict Reconstruction at the University of Western Ontario.
 
Dr. Oosterveld will unpack the realities of seeking justice for survivors of gender-based crimes in war. This lecture will explore examples of gender-based crimes from current conflicts, calls for justice by survivors and mechanisms available for investigating and prosecuting these crimes. Dr. Oosterveld will also speak to her experience presenting submissions to the International Criminal Court on the crime of forced marriage in the Ongwen Case.

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Valerie Oosterveld is Professor of Law and Associate Director of the Centre for Transitional Justice and Post-Conflict Reconstruction at the University of Western Ontario. Her research and writing focus on gender issues within international criminal justice, including on the concept of gender in international criminal law, and the interpretation of sexual and gender-based crimes by international criminal courts and tribunals. Dr. Oosterveld holds a J.S.D. from Columbia University.
