2020 Vancouver International Humanitarian Law Conference

cyber warfare error message on computer screen
The Canadian Red Cross presents the 2020 International Humanitarian Law (IHL) academic conference. This conference will bring together experts from the field, including academics, and representatives from the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, to discuss current issues and the continued importance of IHL during situations of armed conflict. This year the conference will focus on cyber warfare within an IHL context and explore what protections and rules might apply.

While cyber warfare is not specifically addressed in the 1949 Geneva Conventions or their Additional Protocols, the principles enshrined in the treaties are applicable to new and emerging means and methods of armed conflict. Join us as we examine the relevance of IHL in today’s modern armed conflicts and the challenges to its implementation when faced with 21st century concerns such as cyber warfare.
