This child in Mauritania was found to be malnourished during a food security assessment undertaken by the IFRC, the Mauritanian Red Crescent and French Red Cross last fall. Mauritania is one of the countries currently affected by the West Africa food crisis, along with Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad and parts of Senegal. Food insecurity due to a poor harvest season has left millions hungry. The Red Cross is working to provide emergency relief for these affected populations, especially the most vulnerable groups, which include children suffering from malnutrition.
