Red Cross Volunteers help bring relief to those affected by Sandy

American Red Cross volunteers are working around the clock in support of relief efforts. As of yesterday, the American Red Cross had provided more than 30,000 overnight shelter stays and deployed more than 3,800 disaster workers and 240 response vehicles. As the roads and airports re-open, they are mobilizing relief supplies and relief vehicles and trucks containing clean-up materials that are on their way from warehouses across the country. 60 trailers of relief supplies are being actively distributed to those in need.

Cleanup is also well under way in New Jersey, where volunteers are working hard to get residents back in their homes as soon as possible:

Thousands of volunteers are hard at work providing water, hot meals, and comfort in the parts of the country hardest hit by Sandy. Feeding sites have been set up and volunteers have served nearly 215, 174 meals so far.

Twelve mobile relief kitchens have been dispatched this week. The Spirit of America (pictured below) has the capacity to prepare 30,000 meals a day.

The Canadian Red Cross also relies on trained disaster response volunteers to assist locally in small and large-scale emergencies in communities across Canada. Visit www.redcross.ca to find out how to get involved in your community.
