How we would prepare Katniss for the “Hunger Games”

Have “Hunger Games” on the brain? The film version of the first book from this popular trilogy is set to hit theatres soon. If you haven’t heard of this futuristic story before, it’s about 12 young men and 12 young women who are chosen to compete to literally survive on a reality TV show.

Our friends at the American Red Cross wrote a fun blog about what they would give Katniss – the story’s main character – if they were her “sponsor”. In the “Hunger Games”, sponsors give the contestants items to help them be prepared for what they could face during the competition.

We thought we would add a little Canadian twist to this! Here are some items that we would give Katniss, if we were her sponsor.

1. Emergency Preparedness Kit – this grab-and-go kit would have everything that Katniss would need, including a first aid kit and a crank radio/flashlight. Also, it’s a backpack so it’s easy to carry while you are running from danger.

2.   MREs (or Meals Ready to Eat) – We would give Katniss a bunch of these to put in her preparedness kit. MREs are entire meals that come in a pouch - all you have to do to heat it up is add some water to cause a chemical reaction. No cooking is required! The MREs have lots of carbs and calories to help keep Katniss energized and alert.

3.  Toque – this Canadian fashion staple will keep Katniss warm at night. Your head can lose up to 20 per cent of the body’s heat, so the quickest and simplest thing to do to stay warm is wear a hat.

4.   PFD – Katniss also might find herself in a boat. If that’s the case, she can wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) to keep her afloat in the water if her boat tips.

And, while we know Katniss is pretty good at fending for herself in the woods, we would recommend that she take a wilderness first aid course before the show even starts.

Are we missing any items? What would you give Katniss to help her be prepared?
