Volunteer profile: Getting back behind the wheel

Many Red Cross programs and services are made possible because of the dedication of our volunteers. I recently heard about one volunteer in Sault Ste. Marie, who exemplifies what dedication is all about.

The past 11-years, Bob Grant has been providing rides to seniors and others in his community to medical or other appointments. Since becoming a volunteer, he has driven many clients many places, and in doing so, has become part of their lives.

On January 2, he suffered a heart attack.

While receiving emergency treatment in the hospital, Bob thought not only of his family and friends, but also of the two clients he was supposed to drive the next day. He didn’t want them to worry about him and wonder where he was. Knowing how important Bob’s clients are to him, his wife called them to let them know what had happened.

Over the next few weeks of recovery, Bob had a new concern: would he be able to get behind the wheel as a volunteer driver ever again? After a period of rest and relaxation, he finally heard the news he had been longing to hear. “My surgeon agreed that returning to volunteer driving would be good therapy for me. My wife told me later that I had a grin on my face from ear-to-ear,” he said.

And, we have some more good news to share. Yesterday, Bob returned to doing what he loves: driving his clients where they need to go. We are so happy to have him back!
