Volunteer spotlight: A long way from home

Emmanuel Nsabimana

Emmanuel Nsabimana is a Canadian Red Cross volunteer in Truro, NS.

As a dedicated volunteer, you can find Emmanuel Nsabimana at the Canadian Red Cross in Truro, Nova Scotia most Wednesday mornings.

He volunteers at the reception desk, helping people with everything from the loan of healthcare equipment from our HELP program and answering questions from the public to accepting donations. He also recently joined the local Red Cross emergency response team. He’s quickly become a valued member of the Red Cross team in his community.

His connection with the Red Cross started in his native Rwanda.

In fact, he credits the invaluable Red Cross restoring family links program with helping him find his brother several years ago. The siblings became separated following conflict in his home country. He recalls looking at lists of names posted on a wall in the refugee camp where he was living, hoping to find news of his brother, and then the joy he felt after finally being reunited with his brother.

He previously volunteered as a member of his high school’s Red Cross club in Malawi.

“So many people need help... I thought why couldn’t I get involved and do something,” explained Emmanuel who also volunteers his time with the regional development organization CoRDA to help other newcomers to Canada find resources and support.

Emmanuel came to Truro in 2006 to study at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, an opportunity that was offered to him through the WUSC program. When he completed his studies this past spring, he looked for ways to get involved in his community and found the Red Cross.
