Walmart, RBC and BMO support Red Cross response to flooding in Saskatchewan and Manitoba

July 08, 2014 - National corporate partners like Walmart Canada and RBC; and corporate donors like BMO are helping the Canadian Red Cross assist those affected by flooding in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Walmart is providing water and clean up supplies to meet immediate needs; RBC is accepting donations at Saskatchewan and Manitoba locations and has made a $30,000 donation. BMO has announced a $25,000 donation to help the response.

When the war broke out in the oil city of Malakal, in South Sudan, my [Nuer] community was targeted to be killed’’, says Angela Nyakuok Riek. Angela is 60 years old and left South Sudan in 2006 to become a refugee in Kenya. She is among the 449 South Sudanese refugees who live in one of Kenya’s five Dadaab refugee camps on the Somali border and for years she was overlooked by humanitarian agencies that seek young energetic English-speaking youth to employ in the camps.

Canadian aid workers deploy to Chile to support psychosocial needs after major earthquake

May 26, 2014 - Following the 8.2 magnitude earthquake in Chile on April 1, 2014, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies mobilized its Regional Response Unit (RRU) for the first time.  Bringing together expertise from Red Cross National Societies, including the Canadian Red Cross, the unit provided support for the emotional and psychological needs of those affected and helps build the capacity of Chilean Red Cross volunteers so they can continue to provide psychosocial support to communities in the future.
