Ottawa, March 5, 2014 – The Canadian Red Cross is closely monitoring the civil unrest in Ukraine and will provide assistance as needed along with other members of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The Ukrainian Red Cross has been responding to the unrest since its onset in November 2013. Emergency response teams have been working around the clock for months, providing first aid to the wounded from all sides and transporting them to hospitals. In the most intense three days, more than 660 people received first aid assistance from the Ukrainian Red Cross.

The Ukrainian Red Cross has recruited and trained new volunteers, distributed materials about emblem use and protection and the Movement’s Fundamental Principles through leaflets and mass media, liaised with hospitals and ambulance service and met frequently with authorities and law enforcement agencies.

This action has been made possible through financial and technical support from Red Cross Movement partners.

Canadians wishing to support the humanitarian relief efforts of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Ukraine are encouraged to make a financial donation to the Ukraine Civil Unrest Fund. Donations to this fund will help the Red Cross respond to the needs of individuals and communities affected by the unrest.
