Canadian Red Cross responding to flood evacuees across Alberta

(Ottawa) June 21, 2013 - Canadian Red Cross is responding on multiple fronts as more individuals and families are affected by flooding in Alberta. Canadian Red Cross is supporting the municipalities and communities affected and will continue to work closely with officials to ensure that the basic needs of evacuees are being met. The Red Cross has been mobilizing personnel and supplies such as cots, hygiene kits and blankets to meet needs as requested by the municipalities and counties.

“The Canadian Red Cross is actively working to ensure that all affected individuals and communities receive immediate assistance,” said John Byrne, director general for disaster management at the Canadian Red Cross.

Current Red Cross Activities include:
  • Supporting the City of Calgary with sheltering services, supplies and personnel to support flood evacuees
  • Registration at County of Lethbridge reception centre
  • Registration at City of Lethbridge reception centre
  • Providing cots, blankets and hygiene kits to Blackie, DeWinton, and Nanton to support the evacuees of High River
  • Providing cots, blankets and hygiene kits to Exshaw
  • Canadian Red Cross is closely monitoring several other communities across the province and volunteers are on stand-by
