Canadian Red Cross announces additional financial support for Ottawa tornado recovery

November 01, 2018

The Canadian Red Cross is offering more financial help to individuals and families in the Ottawa area who were affected by the tornadoes in September.

All impacted households in Ontario who have registered with the Red Cross and have not yet received any Red Cross financial assistance will automatically receive funds to help with their immediate needs:

  • Households of three people or fewer will receive $600
  • Households of four or more people will receive $800

The Red Cross will also provide additional financial assistance for unexpected costs related to temporary accommodation, debris removal, replacement of household items and extraordinary needs.

Impacted individuals and families who have not yet registered with the Canadian Red Cross, or who have outstanding needs regardless of previous assistance received, are encouraged to call 1-800-863-6582 or visit one of our in-person locations:

  • West Carleton, City of Ottawa Facility, 5670 Carp Rd., Kinburn
    • Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Arlington Woods, Woodvale Pentecostal Church, 205 Greenbank Rd., Ottawa
    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Red Cross is also allocating up to $300,000 to support community organizations with their relief and recovery efforts. Community organizations play a critical role in recovery and the Community Partnerships Program is a project-based grants program that is available for non-profits, charities, and other community organizations working towards the recovery of those impacted by disasters in the Ottawa area. Interested organizations can contact ONCommunityPartners@redcross.ca for more information.

As recovery efforts continue, Canadian Red Cross remains committed to helping people on their road to recovery by providing not only financial assistance but information, referrals and emotional support for those who need it. Financial assistance will not duplicate existing support either at the provincial or municipal levels, or through insurance.
