Ottawa, April 21, 2016  - The Canadian Red Cross is pleased to announce that 10 banks in Canada will be accepting cash donations from the public in support of Red Cross efforts to assist individuals and communities affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the coast of Ecuador, on April 16.

“The earthquake resulted in significant damage and extensive humanitarian need,” says Conrad Sauvé, president and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. “Thanks to participating banks, Canadians will have another method to donate to support Red Cross activities in response to this emergency.”

So far, the earthquake has claimed hundreds of lives and thousands have been injured. The Red Cross response to this disaster was immediate. Hundreds of volunteers from the Ecuadorian Red Cross are working around the clock, providing first aid, psychosocial support, supporting search and rescue efforts and conducting rapid assessments to identify the need for additional aid. At this time, emergency relief including shelter, water and healthcare have been identified as priority needs.
