Photo of the Day: What do Skittles have to do with first aid?

Janelle Warren, First Aid and Water Safety in Ontario

When getting ready for a Global TV Morning Show interview, Janelle Warren, from the First Aid and Water Safety team in Ontario, polled her Facebook friends to find out whether parents have stories of children putting things in their nose and ears.

They sure did! Parents talked about the many random things children have stuffed in their ears and eyes, including beans, peanuts, beads, candy and even a Barbie shoe.

So what do you do?

  • Grasp it and pull it out if the object is clearly visible and can be grasped
  • Don't play operation and try to get it out with tweezers or other tools
  • Go to the doctor and seek medical assistance to remove it

Janelle was on Global TV to talk about first aid for children, specifically what to do if a child has a nosebleed, how to look for signs of a concussion, what to do in case of poisoning, and what to do when kids put foreign objects in their nose and ears.
