Photo of the Day: Putting women at the center of community health programs

Every day, we publish a photo to show the Red Cross at work across the country or around the world. Do you have a photo to share? Let us know!

In honour of International Women’s day, today’s photo highlights the work by the Afghan Red Crescent to address the unique challenges of maternal, child and newborn health.  The Society has designed a new approach to community health, putting women at the centre of the planning process and its program design.  They began with the recruitment and training of two female master trainers who travelled to remote regions of Afghanistan to meet with community leaders and discuss the benefits of putting women at the heart of their local health programs and identifying women who would go on the become health volunteers within the community.

Communities are already benefiting from the work of female Red Crescent volunteers. They deliver key health messages to women living in villages, perform simple health interventions and refer women to health clinics for antenatal care, prenatal care and family planning.
